Roy has been a serious student of the history and conservation of windmills since 1974 when he took responsibility for the windmill in Skidby in East Yorkshire. His wide research led to his first book “East Yorkshire Windmills” published in 1985 and more recently (2009) “Windmills in Yorkshire” with Laurence Turner.

He published “The Industrial Windmill in Britain” in 2005 and has researched the uses of wind power across Britain and many parts of East and West Europe. He has presented papers to TIMS and was for three year chairman of the SPAB Mills Section. A retired solicitor, he had an abiding interest in the work of the  Hull millwrights Messrs Norman and Smithson.

In 2003 he was one of the first to join the Friends of the Mills Archive and had deposited parts of his collection in the Archive. He will be much missed by friends and colleagues around the world. If you would like to be put in contact with Roy’s daughter email friends@millsarchive.com and we will pass your email on.
