Renewable Energy & Electricity Generation in the 1970s and 1980s: An Education Pack

In September to December 2023, The Mills Archive Trust (under the Reading EmPOWERed project) had the privilege of teaming up with the History Department in the University of Reading to host two undergraduate students, Megan Phillips and Katie Dawson, who were with us for ten days over ten weeks.

Megan and Katie were tasked with creating an educational pack on the development of renewable energy for electricity generation in the 1970s and 80s, using our records at the Mills Archive Trust. This pack was designed for young adults and teenagers from 13-17 years old.

The students surpassed our expectations, producing material ranging from handouts to a recorded mock debate, as well as recording a two hour interview with Dr Peter Musgrove, founder of the British Wind Energy Association (now Renewable UK).

The material is copyrighted under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. It is free to be used and distributed, so long as its creators (Katie Dawson, Megan Phillips and the Mills Archive Trust) are given due recognition.

This placement was made possible by the University of Reading (with a big thanks to module convenor Dr. Jacqui Turner). It was funded by National Lottery players through the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The records used to create this pack are available for use by appointment at our archive in Reading. If you have any questions, comments or feedback, feel free to email outreach@millsarchive.org.
