The sluice controls the Great Ouse river system along with other river systems which converge at Denver. The new cut was made during 1960-61 as a flood relief channel. Flows are controlled by the A.G.Wright sluice, also known as the Head Sluice. It is made of reinforced concrete with three openings, each with a vertical lift gate 30ft wide.
