Millstones

Author: Charles Rowntree

Whilst excavating to build a new house attached to Beckside mill we found a millstone with what has obviously been a drilled and bolted rynd.

The ones that I have seen in the past have been secured with lead. Whilst I have no objection to drilling and bolting, though I would have thought that continual vibration might have occasioned the bolts to loosen, I find it a little unusual. Am I correct or was this a fairly common practice? I have attached a couple of photos for your delectation and delight. We also found the old kiln fireplace with grate bars and door which still worked on its hinges. Again photo attached.

If you have any thoughts on the stone I would love to hear them.
