Insurance and the restoration of Jack Windmill

Author: Sussex Miller

In May 2012 Jack Windmill changed hands for the first time in 35 years. The new owners are keen to ensure that the ravages of time can be significantly reversed in order to bring the mill buildings back into a state that all enthusiastic millers would wish them to be.

Volunteers have already carried out some minor repairs to Jack as well as the construction of a temporary cover to weather-proof the tower when the cap is removed for repairs.

Progress is being documented on the Sussex Mills Group website at www.sussexmillsgroup.org.uk/jackmill.htm.

The most significant obstacle to the works has been the inability to find an insurer willing to cover volunteers working at ground level with woodworking machinery and at height on professionally erected scaffolding. Despite numerous telephone calls and emails, no insurance cover has yet been offered, and there is every likelihood that sadly the volunteers will feel unable to assist further with the restoration of this nationally important tower mill.
