Wanted: new owner for mill

Author: Chris Hullcoop

Great Whelnetham tower mill, listed Grade II, near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, is on the market. This mill, along with its small group of buildings, is a rare survival of a small country milling business. Both the windmill and the later oil engine driven mill are in a substantially compete condition including the millstones.

There is a date stone of 1865 still visible on the mill.

The small size of this mill, 28 feet to the curb, diameter of curb 11 feet, means it could be restored to working order far more easily than most larger mills.

It has a fine open situation on the village edge with half to 2 acres of land available. There is the possibility of building a new cottage.

The small oil engine driven mill is complete with stones, hopper and sack hoist, plus a bin in good order.

The price is likely to be low and affordable depending on new cottage building potential.
