Millers
Donald Muggeridge often took the opportunity of capturing millers he encountered by posing them in front of their mills. We have more than 40 images in our collection, of which these are a representative selection.

Mr TH Edwards 1954
Thomas Edwards, the last miller at Little Hadham smock mill, Hertfordshire. The mill ceased working by wind in 1929 when a gale destroyed the sails. Work continued using a gas engine until 1941. Although it was hoped to trestore the mill in the late 1970s, it burned down in 1981 and very little now remains.
Mr Edwin Richardson 1939
Edwin Richardson, the last miller at Edwardstone smock mill, Suffolk.
Mr R Spencer 1939
Dick Spencer, the last miller at the post mill at Wenhaston, Suffolk, which was known as ‘Kitty Mill’.
Mr J Court 1935
Mr Court and his dog at Old Mill, Northbourne, Kent – one of two tarred smock mills at Northbourne. Both finished work on only two sweeps. The New Mill survives as a partial conversion, minus its cap: Old Mill was demolished in 1957.
