Workshops

Do you have your own collection of images and documents, and would like some advice on how to look after it? Or perhaps you work at a mill or other organisation and would like some training on not just looking after the material but promoting it to the public? As a nationally accredited archive service and an educational charity, we provide training for those who seek guidance on gathering and caring for their own collections.

We are experienced in helping a wide range of people, from the student to the family history researcher, mill enthusiast and technical expert. Our training workshops are particularly popular with those who volunteer at a mill and who are looking advice to help look after and promote their mill’s own collection of images and documents.

Whether you have a shoebox, cupboard or room full of photos, letters, diaries and documents, we can help you to understand what you have and how to look after it. We advise on how to care for items, as well as how to record what you have so you can easily find it.  We also offer advice on conducting research and expanding your collection.

Our guidance can be as simple or developed as you wish, it all depends on what support and advice you would like. We can also recommend which training would best help you to achieve your own aspirations.

CARING FOR YOUR COLLECTION

This is our core training workshop. This day-long workshop covers why it is important to keep records, how to preserve vulnerable photographs and documents, how to catalogue collections and how to make them available online.

Workshop sizes are limited so that you get as much interaction with the Archive team and your fellow participants as possible.

We invite you to bring an item that you would like advice on how to care for and we will try to feature your example in the workshop. Please ensure that you bring an item you are happy to show to the other participants.

Workshop enrolment is £100 per person, which goes towards the Collections Fund. This Fund ensures that the Mills Archive’s material is preserved for generations to come. Lunch, refreshments and a training manual (worth £25) are all included in the price.

Discounts are available for Friends, Heritage Partners and Corporate Friends: please enquire for further details.
