Book written on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Freiburg Mining Academy. The first part covers the history of the extraction of ores of various different metals, including silver, lead, copper and tungsten, in the Ore Mountains; the second is devoted to the Freiburg Mining Academy; the third covers the iron ore deposits in Saxony and the smelting techniques in the different locations of the Ore Mountains up to the present day. In each case it describes the geology and the relevant extraction and processing techniques, including the use of hammer mills, explaining the technical jargon used by miners. The book is illustrated with historical pictures and portraits.
