£18.00

The Journal of The Arms & Armour Society, Jubliee Number, vol. XVII, no. 1

Card cover, 90pp., with colour and b/w photographs and drawings.

English translation of ‘Das Feuerwerkbuch’, c.1400. Contains details about gunpowder in Medieval Germany and the processes used to make it.

The medieval firework book was written by alchemists for the instruction of master gunners who could rely on the quality and composition of their gunpowder only if they incorporated its constituents themselves. It is a treatise on gunpowder.

The Freiburg manuscript, copied out in 1432 in Middle High German, is now printed in English for the first time.

The publication marks the 50th anniversary of the Arms & Armour Society. It will interest all those concerned with the development of military technology, with the history of science or with the medieval industry.
