The Industrial archaeology of Bristol is concerned with the history and archaeology of industry in the city of Bristol and the surrounding areas of South Gloucestershire and North Somerset which constitute its immediate hinterland. The region has its boundaries some twenty miles from Bristol, and coincides approximately with the basin of the River Avon. it embraces the Mendip Hills with their long history of lead and zinc ore production, the Bristol coalfield and a variety of small industries which utilised the abundant rivers and streams as sources of power. Variety, in therms of the wide range of industries, characterises the region and the city which forms its centre. The evolution of the port of Bristol is considered in some detail together with the industries based on its port function, the region’s transport networks and public services.
