Industrial archaeology of Southern England

£18.00

Hard cover with dust jacket, 218pp., diagrams, tables, maps and 32 pages of b/w plates.

The counties covered by this book are: Somerset, Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire, and Gloucestershire (east of the river Severn).

After a general survey of the area, Mr Hudson begins with chapters on transport and a number of important industries such as textiles, pottery, brick and tile making and food manufacture, including brewing. Although the emphasis is on the archaeology of industry with details of the best sites, there is also extensive background material on economics and trade generally, together iwht many fascinating asides on social history.

The main text is followed by a gazetteer of the chief sites which should prove of lasting reference value not only to industrial archaeologists, but to people with a lively sense of local history who live in or visit Southern England. The extensive bibliography and other reference material is of especial value.
