The fifty fourth item is a photograph featuring Flatford mill. The mill is located in the village of East Bergholt in the Babergh District of Suffolk just north of the Essex border. The date of 4th May 1946 is recorded on the back of the photograph. In addition, we are given the information that Flatford mill was still “working” on this date and that the print was presented to E. M. Gardner by the great niece of “Willie Lotts”. The note regarding Gardner’s gift of the photograph was clearly written by Gardner herself as the handwriting style is unmistakably hers and is signed “E M G 4. 5. 46”. Presumably, this information appears to indicate the date on which Gardner was presented with the photograph as opposed to the date of production.
