The function of this mill changed several times thoughout its history as a functioning mill. In 1854 it was still a 'Turning mill', or bobbin mill, as shown on the OS map of that year. At the time it was converted into Holywell Brewery in 1857 it was a flax mill (Conisbrough and Denaby Main Heritage Group, Hollywell Brewery).
