The first record of a mill on this site dates from 1594. A second was built in the early years of the 17th century. Maps from 1797 and 1880 indicate that there were two adjacent mills on the site. Photographs from the end of the 19th century show two tower mills, both four-sailers, one of which was possibly built of brick. There are reports that one of the mills at one time was an eight-sailer driving three pairs of stones.
