Upper Mill still stands in the grounds of Mill Farm in Brasted. It has been empty for a great many years but is preserved in good condition and is used as a garage and store. The structure consists of a three-storey tarred brick and weatherboard structure; all flooring was removed a long time ago, although the sack hoist canopy remains perhaps retaining its pulley wheels. The waterwheel was overshot and has disappeared many many years ago. Because of its size this mill was unlikely to be any more than a 'two-pair' affair. Little is known of its history although it was certainly in existence at the turn of the nineteenth century. Directory references reveal that it was operated by the Smith family for much of that century and latterly by William Barton Jr. who operated the other mill in the village. The last reference given for this mill was 1887, after which it presumably ceased to function.
