Old Mill, Tonge

A water-powered corn mill in the historic county of Kent, England.

The mill is Grade II Listed and has been converted to houses, no machinery. A plaque "R.H. 1759" gives us the probable building date for this mill; it is a large five-storey brick and weatherboard building which forms a continuous range with the mill house and former granary. No machinery survives but the wheel arch can be seen which probably housed a breastshot wheel of some size, and a bin remains upstairs in the loft. It was converted into a house in 1837 in favour of a new and superior site across the road where the new mill stands; it is not doubtful as to whether both mills ever ran in conjunction. The building is maintained in excellent condition, the way body has twisted with age gives it a charming 'quaint' appearance.
