North Mill, Freckenham

There were two mills in Freckenham in 1292 assessed at 40s. a year so it is possible that the two mills in Freckenham in the 19th-20th centuries were built on the same sites (Callard, 1924, p. 66-7). North Mill was built in 1821 according to Dolman (1978, p. 43). A ground floor inscription stated that 'The first grist ground at this mill was (by) Mr Ino Norman, Freckenham, June 30th, 1824' (Flint, 1979, p. 54). The mill had two patent sails and two common sails. It worked until c 1930 and was demolished in 1967 (Dolman, 1978, p. 43).
