A mill had stood here since the mid 18th century. It was rebuilt in 1818-19 by Reuben Hunt of Thaxted, with one pair of stones. By 1844 it had three pairs of stones and a 'bake office' attached. The upper part of the mill was dismantled in around 1912 leaving only the brick base, where the stones were worked by an oil engine. The base was later converted into a house.
