The watermill was built on this before the 13th century. It was converted into a paper mill, and a windmill was built on the site to pump the water in 1719. In 1780 the mill was badly damaged by a fire. By 1788 it was used again for corn milling, but in the 1830s the mill was converted back to paper milling, and provided paper for both Scottish and English banknotes. By 1899 the mill became a tallow mill.
