A steam powered stone mill was built here by the Rankin family in the mid 19th century, to take over the work of the nearby post and tide mills. It burnt down in the 1870s and was rebuilt as a five story brick roller mill. The mill was extended, rebuilt and remodelled at various times in the 20th century and became part of Allied Mills. It ceased work in 2000 and was damaged by fire in 2008.
