In 1765 Rowley Heylands set up the first industrial mill in the north of Ireland, which encouraged the production of wheat. By the 1830s Crumlin had become a post town. Crumlin's Mill was five stories high, and was initially powered by three waterwheels. The mill suffered a fire on the night of 24 December 1884, believed to be caused by the friction of the elevators.
