At Domesday six mills were recorded in High Wycombe. In later times, further mill sites were developed. Overall, eleven mill sites are known, ten mills surviving into the 20th century or late nineteenth century. Hedge Mill had its origins as a water mill. It was the scene of a big fire in 1828. Water power continued to be used till late in the 19th century. However, the mill buildings were demolished in the early part of the 20th century and replaced by new brick buildings. A 40 horse-power vertical water turbine replaced the former water wheel. Steam power was also used.
