At Domesday six mills were recorded in High Wycombe. In later times, further mill sites were developed. Overall, eleven mill sites are known, ten mills surviving into the 20th century or late nineteenth century. In 1638 there is a reference to a new paper mill in Loudwater. Until about 1915 the mill was served by a water wheel, after which steam engines were introduced. In 1945 there was a substantial fire.
