This castle is open to the public and there is a fine and rather early example of a horse wheel for pumping water which is behind the main building under a tiled roof. The engine consists of an upright shaft with a 1.82m (6ft) diameter gear wheel with wooden face gear. This engages with the cast-iron gear wheel mounted on the crank rods of the pumps. At present the pump gear and frame has slipped and the gears do not meet. It is a pity that this wheel has not been restored.
