    Scope & contentSummary Translation

A historical overview of milling in the Bernburg area of Saxony Anhalt: water mills may have first been built on the Saale here in the second half of the 10th century. The text describes in detail the evolution of named mills and their ownership, organisation and technology from the feudal period to the princely state to capitalist industrialisation in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The second, longer part of the book is devoted to the expansion of the nationalised milling industry after 1945 in the GDR, including the names of outstanding workers and awards given to named milling enterprises. The textual part ends with a brief description of the landscape of the Saale valley, illustrated with black-and-white photos.

The book as a whole is illustrated with historical pictures, photos and diagrams of exterior views and the milling mechanism. There are also some historical maps and reproductions of documents, etc. A loose fold-out map of the valley between Rothenburg and Calbe shows historical watercourses, islands, the locations of surviving water mills and abandoned mill sites.
