Scope & contentThis 178-page book in Swedish is a thorough survey of windmills and watermills on the island of Gotland of the east coast of Sweden.

The first watermills on the island appeared in the 13th century and the first windmills is mentioned in a document from the beginning of the 14th century. According to the laws there were no restrictions for the free farmers to build their own mills provided they did not hinder other mill owners or fish in the rivers or the sea.

In 1653 there were 134 mills on Gotland, 99 watermills and 35 windmills. This book has maps on all mills, even ruined ones on Gotland in 1653, 1697, 1700, 1781, 1809, 1888 and 1971-72. In addition it has photographs, drawings on mills and various types of sails.

Pages 91 – 174 have tables on mills on every parish on Gotland.

Pages 175-76 has a SUMMARY IN GERMAN.
