An account of 21 water mills in the Swiss half canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden, almost none of which survive as mills.
The introduction contains general information about ownership, technology and regulations. The mills are listed by district. In each case the author gives whatever information he has, which varies considerably from mill to mill. After a description of the location and mention of all the names each one is known by, it includes details of the millers, the buildings, their evolution, and their current use, where known.The mills were used for flour, sawing and textiles. The book is richly illustrated with photos and historical reproductions.
