    Scope & contentSummary Translation

A guide to the windmills of the Lower Rhine. It starts with an overview of the technical evolution of windmills, covering the sails and the millstones as well as the evolution of the mills themselves and their decline in the 20th century. It also looks briefly at mills in folklore, and the laws and regulations governing them through the ages. The final part of the introduction considers problems of conservation. The main part of the book contains information about 169 mills between Kleve and Meckenheim. The information generally covers each mill’s history, the owners and tenants, developments and changes in use, and its current state. It ends with suggestions of routes for tourists taking in several of the mills in the book, and recommends visits to the Netherlands as well. There is also an index of miller families, and information about the book’s publisher, the Verein Linker Niederrhein, which promotes heritage-linked hikes. The book is illustrated with maps, diagrams, black-and-white photos and a few drawings.
