Scope & content | A pictorial biography of Jacob van Ruisdael (1628-1682) who is well-known for immortalising Dutch windmills and watermills in his paintings. It is also a history of mills in the Netherlands as the paintings show particular features that demonstrate the construction or machinery of the mill and the landscape in which they were situated. Some mills are painted several times from different angles, particularly the watermills. |
