Scope & content | Traces the history of Shawford Mill and its development into Shawford Mill Theatre that produced opera from 1957 to 1984. A map of the layout of the mill in 1844 and its construction and machinery are described and illustrated with photographs. The mill was used for fulling and 'blue dyeing' of woollen cloth, and was one of the largest dyeing mills in the area. It was operated by water power and latterly by steam. There was evidence of furnaces on the site. The author also describes his own family history and connections with the area around Frome. A long list of all the production staff and musicians who were associated with the mill theatre is provided at the back of the book. |
