Scope & content | Summary Translation Catalogue of an exhibition running from 15.6.1980 to 21.9.1980 in Bremerhaven featuring tiles decorated with pictures of mills (mainly windmills). The introduction describes the development of mills in Holland and the various types and subtypes, with sketches of each. It then describes the production of tiles in Antwerp and the evolution of motifs. The first mill motifs appeared in the first half of the 17th century; from 1640 onwards they appeared more frequently as part of landscape series. Later mill tiles were produced in other countries. The introduction then describes the construction of different uses of windmills. Most of the booklet consists of black-and-white reproductions of the tiles on show, plus a few diagrams of windmills. |
