Scope & contentThis book is in two parts. The first part is an examination of the evidence of the origins and uses of the locally named Shot Tower in Crane's park now believed to have been built as a windmill possibly used in part of the processing of raw materials or pump lifting water using a scoop wheel. The second half brings together stories about the mill and the gunpowder works including new research on the story of John Butts who owned the mills during the Napoleonic Wars when the Hounslow Powder Mills were the largest private supplier of gunpowder supplementing the Ordnance mills at Faversham and Waltham Abbey. There is a Roll of Honour to the workers and others who died during the operation of the Hounslow Powder Mills and Bedfont Mills.
