    Scope & contentSummary Translation

A book about old water and windmills in Lower Saxony and Bremen. It starts with an overview of the history of mills in the area, describing the different types and the rights and obligations of millers. It continues with a description of the mills on a route from East Friesland, which has only windmills, via Bremen to Gottingen. The next parts look in detail at the construction of sails, water wheels, millstones, cogwheels, and ornamentation. It then goes on to the different uses of mills, in addition to grain milling: tanning, pumping, sawing, oil pressing, fulling, paper making and powder grinding. It looks at some of the millers still working, and then describes the preservation and reconstruction of mills. The book is very richly illustrated with colour photos, and contains a map of all those pictured.
