    Scope & contentSummary Translation

A guide to the wind and water mills of the Plön district of Schleswig-Holstein. After a brief introduction to mills in general and those of Germany in particular, the book describes the history of the district and its rulers, and the development and use of mills there. It then looks at the different mills in detail, including the construction, the millers and the evolution and decline of each one. In addition to grain, there were fulling and stamping mills, paper mills, sawmills, oil mills, hammer mills and tanning mills. There is a list of mills whose exact locations are no longer known. The final pages of the book are devoted to some of the millwrights active in the area over the course of history. The appendix lists the mills in different ways: according to sub-district; all water mills (with first mention and current use); wind mills that have been relocated; mills according to use. A graphic shows the dates of operation of all the windmills. There is an alphabetical list of the names of the millers and another of the location of the mills. Windmills are further listed according to the reason they were built. It ends with a glossary. The book is illustrated with black-and-white drawings and photos, historical maps, advertisements and diagrams.
