| Scope & content | A booklet written in 1965 on the development of the Sturbridge Village, New England. The main text gives a guide to the history of the Village and a walking guide to it. Gives information on the main industries of the village. Most notably the Up-and- Down Sawmill, the Grist mill and the Carding Mill are discussed. Interestingly it mentions that when simple handmade machinery came to be used some sawyers resented this new technology and burned or wrecked the mills/ machinery in a bid to continue their 'old craft.' The Grist mill and the Carding Mill reflect local needs for other essential products besides timber. Each mill had its own raceway for directing water from the Millpond to its water-driven wheel. |
