    Scope & contentSummary Translation

A guide to the Vogtsbauernhof open air museum. The exhibits include a water-driven sawmill from Willmershof in Schwärzenbach, built in 1673 at the same time as the farm of which it was part. It was a knock saw, or cam saw: there is a detailed description of its operation. A second exhibit is the grain mill from the Adamshof in the Vorderlehensgericht in Schiltach, built in 1609. There is a detailed description of its operation. It not only ground grain, but also had a stamping mechanism to make pearl barley. This was also used to crush bones for dog food, and for millet, spelt, hay flowers and sometimes hemp. Also on show in the museum is a barley mill, a technique introduced to the Black Forest at the end of the 19th century, which husks barley by rolling it between two rollers. Finally, the museum has a water-driven hemp roller mill, which was not part of the normal equipment of a Black Forest farm, but some farmers provided this service along with grain milling. The text describes its operation. The booklet is illustrated with drawings that focus on the explanations given in the text.
