    Scope & contentSummary Translation

Booklet published to accompany a mill exhibition held in the historic Sanssouci mill. The introduction describes the Lower Rhine region, stretching from Cologne (the site of the first German windmill, documented in 1222) to the Dutch border, and the different types of mill in general terms: windmills, water mills and floating mills. The second part of the booklet looks at the local mills in more detail: post mills, tower mills – towers e.g. in city walls built mainly for defence but also exploited as mills – Dutch mills, the development of caps and star wheels, water mills and water wheels, water wheels as a driver of industry, the end of wind and water mills and the current use of the buildings. It ends with a number of anecdotes about mills and millers. The booklet is richly illustrated with colour photos and some diagrams. There is also a sketch map of the area.
