Scope & content | Summary Translation A booklet (apparently one of a series on historical monuments) about the hammer mill in Frohnau in the Ore Mountains of Saxony. It starts with the reasons why the region became important for the production of metal: the presence of iron ore, timber and water, and outlines the history of Frohnau village and its original mills. The hammer mill was first built by a religious refugee from Styria who bought the building in 1629. The text goes on to describe successive millers, the technical innovations they introduced and the type of output they produced until work was abandoned there in 1904, as the hammer became outdated. The second half of the booklet is a detailed description of the mill, which has been converted into a museum, and of the house in which the owners lived. It points out that the owners were themselves skilled workers, working with their apprentices, making a good living from the artistic wrought iron pieces they produced.[The role of the owners is described differently and less favourably in the undated, but presumably later, guide published by the Technisches Museum Frohnauer Hammer.]The booklet is illustrated with several unlabelled diagrams and with black-and-white photos, mainly of the machinery. |
