Scope & contentSummary TranslationA history of the post mill in the Stade open air museum in Lower Saxony. It starts with an overview of milling from ancient times, and describes briefly, with diagrams, the development of windmills, before concentrating on the principle of post mills. There were several post mills on the outskirts of Stade in the mid-16th century, but the last one was demolished in 1886 and replaced by a Dutch mill, which burned down in 1925. Other Dutch mills have also disappeared from the town. The post mill reconstructed in the open air museum came from Rethmar: it had ceased operation and was going to be demolished for a road widening scheme. The text describes in detail the history of the Rethmar mill and its owners. It had already been moved once, in 1880; in the 20th century its operation was hindered by the construction of buildings nearby, but it continued to work until it lost two sails in a storm in 1954.The text goes on to describe the demolition and transport of the mill to its new location and its reconstruction. The book is illustrated with black-and-white photos and diagrams. Two of the photos have detailed captions which explain the working of the machinery shown.
