It continues with the establishment of a fire insurance society by the millers in 1779 and measures to conserve windmills in East Frisia, with a list of surviving mills, most of which can be visited. The final pages are devoted to mills in language, literature, folklore and customs, including the positioning of mill sails to convey a message – a system in use all over Germany and the Netherlands, although the message was not consistent. It ends with old measures used in East Frisia and their equivalents in litres and kilos, and a bibliography. |
