A brief introduction covers the development of milling in general, before detailing the windmills of East Frisia, first documented in 1424, covering ownership and the regulations governing millers. The next section gives a general overview of different types of windmill: post mills, hollow post mills, paltrok mills, tjaskers, Dutch mills, smock mills, gallery mills. It then goes into greater detail about the construction of Dutch mills and the milling process. The following pages look briefly at special kinds of mill that existing in East Frisia: hulling mills, oil mills, paper mills, rolling mills, tanning mills, sawmills, water-lifting mills, sluice mills, shell limestone mills. It continues with the establishment of a fire insurance society by the millers in 1779 and measures to conserve windmills in East Frisia, with a list of surviving mills, most of which can be visited. The final pages are devoted to mills in language, literature, folklore and customs, including the positioning of mill sails to convey a message – a system in use all over Germany and the Netherlands, although the message was not consistent.
