Scope & content | Summary Translation A small brochure with scenic colour photos of some of the mills in the former district of Bremervörde in Lower Saxony. There were once 33 water mills and 25 windmills in the district. In mediaeval times the mills were controlled by the Archbishop of Bremen. The founding dates of the first water mills are not known: the earliest documented mention is 1132 in Malstedt. In the 19th century water mills increasingly faced the problem of lack of water as moors and other previously unproductive land was drained. Millers had to use steam-driven engines, or seek permission to build windmills. |
