Scope & contentFrom the earliest reference to a mill at Llangennith in 1291 to their rapid demise following the introduction of steam-power during the nineteenth century, the author explores the region's rich molinological history. This study of the watermills of the Gower peninsula is the result of many years of research examining historical records and seeking evidence on the ground. The findings are presented as a systematic gazetteer of mills and mill sites across eighteen defined areas. On the Gower peninsula 30 mill sites are described but, continuing the study across the medieval Lordship, this increases to over eighty sites including a diverse range of water-powered establishments including corn mills, fulling mills, pottery mills and forges. There are some unique examples creating an historical perspective from early mills to the innovations of the Industrial Revolution. Additional sections describe the Lordship of the Gower, milling technology and machinery and a glossary of mill terms. The results of the research are complimented by 52 maps (many hand-drawn), 21 sketches and 69 photographic images. An loose addendum about a document relating to Western Mill described as follows with original spelling and punctuation and additional information in square brackets:WALES GLAMORGANSHIRE 1639 THE MILL AT LANGENITHA lease given by Sir Walter Vaughan of Fallersdon, Wilts, Knight to Thomas Phillipp of Cherito, Glam, miller, of one half of the Water Grist Mill in the parish of Langenith commonly called Weston Mill together with the water course, Mill pound and Mill head with the sute [i.e.suite of the mill] of all the tenants of Sir Walter Vaughan in his part of the Manor of Langenith to Grind their corn and grain.
