Natural disasters affecting mills, with specific historical examples; the ownership and running of mills in the medieval period; mills in Speyer; rights and duties of mills and millers; the economic and social role of the miller; millers’ guilds in the Palatinate; role of the assistant who measured the grain; use of donkeys.Mills in coats-of-arms, seals etc; mills and millers in folklore – stories, poems, superstitions, carvings etc; impact of early modern wars on mills. The last two lengthy sections consist of an inventory of mills in the Palatinate in the mid-18th century and a much less detailed inventory for 1964 and 1976.The book is richly illustrated with black-and-white photos, sketches and diagrams. There is a (slightly blurred) hydrographic map of the Palatinate, and a map of the Rheinhessen-Pfalz district showing its administrative divisions, but not the mills; a loose sheet contains a map of the Mill Route in the Wallalb valley, centred on Wallhalben. |
