    Scope & contentSummary Translation

A detailed history of different types of water wheel from antiquity onwards, from its use to raise water to its use in milling. It also describes different kinds of millstone, their production and use; milling techniques; mill repairs.
The examples are international, but there is special information about local Austrian mills, including the flutter wheel, found in some timber-rich Austrian alpine regions, (known as a Wurl in Styria and Waschl in Carinthia), and the mills with horizontal wheels in the Apriach area (known locally as Flodermühlen).
The book ends with a chapter on the rights, rules and obligations connected with mills, and a brief description of the mills personally researched by the author in Austria. The book is richly illustrated with historical and contemporary diagrams, maps and plans, and detailed black-and-white photos.
