| Scope & content | Summary Translation A description of the mills – most of them water mills - in the part of Bavaria known as Franconian Switzerland. The oldest traces of grain milling in the area date back 5000 years; the oldest mill is in Pottenstein, allegedly going back to 970. In the first part of the book the descriptions of the mills are based on cartographic work of the 16th to 18th centuries. They include hammer mills, ore-grinding mills and powder mills as well as windmills and horse mills; the first mention of a windmill dates from 1516, but windmills and horse mills were mainly used as a backup for supplying towns in times of crisis. The descriptions in the second part are largely based on the new land registers drawn up for tax purposes when the whole of the area passed under Bavarian rule in 1803, and later administrative documents.The reasons for the decline of mills in the 20th century, with technical developments, changes in energy provision, and economic and social developments are considered in the next part, followed by details of changes in use and restoration.The book ends with a brief description of saw mills and a discussion of energy provision.There are numerous historical and modern maps, drawings and diagrams, and (mainly black-and-white) photos. There are also a number of tables. |
