    Scope & contentSummary Translation

Book aimed at outlining a concept for the preservation and conservation of mills. The first short chapter covers wind and water mills in the German culture and in the landscape; the next chapter looks at mills in history and their contribution to the economy; this is followed by a description of the different kinds of windmill to be found in the GDR and their sails; the following chapter looks at water wheels, mills on rivers and ship mills.

The second part of the book deals with the considerations to be taken into account over the preservation of mills, which have been falling into disuse over the past 20-30 years. It is important to make a selection in the very near future of which mills should be conserved, in order not to lose these important monuments of technical and production history. It points out that individual mill enthusiasts can help in this along with official bodies. It makes specific suggestions about the work that needs to be carried out.

It then lists first windmills, then water mills, by area, grading them according to the importance of conserving them. This is followed by a list, again by area, of mills that are museums or can be visited in action. Not all of them are in public hands; visitors should contact the millers in question to arrange a time. The book ends with illustrations: black and white photos of mills and mill components and historical diagrams.
