    Scope & contentSummary Translation

The book describes 28 wind and water mills in the Minden-Lübbecke district of Westphalia, out of nearly 40 in the area. Since 1978 they have featured on a mill route, designed as a tourist attraction. There are a number of different types of mill: water mills with overshot or breastshot wheels, with overdrift or underdrift gearing or with turbines; post mills, Dutch mills and horse mills. The styles vary considerably, as did the uses to which they were put. Each page of text is paired with a photo, of mills in the landscape or of details of their construction, including millstones. The more unusual mills include the wind and water mill at Lahde, one of only two in the whole of West Germany, where in 1876 a Dutch mill was built on top of an existing water mill first documented in 1292. Milling can be done using either wind or water, or both at once. Another unusual mill is the one at Messlingen, which has a very rare double windrose. The front endpaper shows a sketch map of the district with all the mills of the tourist route marked, and their type indicated, whether they are described in the book or not.
