Scope & contentSummary TranslationAn updated and expanded version of the 1974 guide (qv). Detailed account of the houses brought together in the Schleswig-Holstein Open Air Museum. They include:A post mill of 1766; the text describes the principles of post mills in general, and the contents of the museum’s mill.A 1778 water mill from Rurup: the text mentions the miller family who leased the mill from 1633 to 1926, and describes the alterations made over the centuries (although several of them have not been included in the museum version), and the machinery of the mill.A spider mill (wind engine) used for grinding from Fockendorf; the text explains the principles and use of spider mills, and the adaptation of this mill to the museum. Most comparable wind engines were used for drainage. A horse mill from Kollmar, which had two shafts, and was covered with an eight or twelve cornered house. The text explains the general principle of horse mills.A Dutch windmill from Hollingstedt, originally built in 1865, but since altered, including for its reconstruction in the museum. It contains documentation about mills, and a number of models.A wind turbine, built in 1922 on a house in Friedrichskoog and which produced electricity for more than 50 years. In the 20th century there were hundreds of such turbines along the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein, providing power for individual farms. There are detailed but unlabelled cross-section sketches of most of the mills.
