Predominantly on the design of windmills but a chapter on waterwheels Preface The first chapter, ‘The mills in our landscape’, surveys the long-established presence of mills in the Dutch landscape, with reference to their representation in art. The second chapter, ‘Types of mills’, outlines the several different types and purposes of mills found in the Netherlands, with line drawings of their working parts. The third chapter, ‘The exterior of windmills’, describes the sails and their construction, the roof or cowl, the tail and other exterior features, with diagrams. The fourth chapter, ‘The interior of windmills’, describes the internal workings of a windmill, illustrated with diagrams. The fifth chapter, ‘Wind-water-mills’, explains the co-ordination of wind- and water-power in a mill, and the use of such mills in drainage. The sixth chapter, ‘Grain mills’, shows, with diagrams, the mechanisms of mills for grinding grain. The seventh chapter describes ‘Hulling mills’ and their features. The eighth chapter covers ‘Sawmills’, with diagrams of their workings. The ninth chapter gives a similar treatment to ‘Oil presses’. A short tenth chapter summarizes ‘Other industrial mills’. The eleventh chapter, ‘Water-mills’, gives a detailed coverage of the history, workings, types and purposes of Dutch water-mills. The twelfth chapter describes ‘The power of windmills’, with an analysis of wind-speeds and the power generated through wind-sails. The thirteenth chapter covers ‘Windmills and electricity’. The fourteenth chapter describes ‘Mill traditions’, including the positioning of stationary sails and their significance. The fifteenth chapter, ‘Mills and festivities’, describes the decking out of mills for festive occasions. The sixteenth chapter, ‘Mills in our history’, exemplifies some incident in Dutch history in which mills played a significant part. The seventeenth chapter, ‘Loss and preservation of mills’, describes the decline in the use of mills, their demolition and the preservation of surviving examples.
